This cowhide covered rucksack was known as the Fernsprechtornister 3. The Fernsprechtornister was made with a canvas or cowhide cover flap. Packs 1, 2 and 3 were issued to the the Kleinerfernsprechtrupp or small phone squads. The squad consisted of 4 men a troop leader and 3 men with packs and associated equipment. This example of a wartime signalman's pack number 3 comes complete with internal frame and exterior
